The-Bali-Nine-two-sentenced-to-death

Author: Harry Von Schlussel

Today, sad news has made headlines all over the world – nine prisoners, two of which are Australians, in the Nusakambangan Prison, Bali, will be executed in the next 24 hours.

The Australians - Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were part of the Bali Nine who were convicted in 2005 over a plot to smuggle around 18.2lbs of heroin from Indonesia to Australia.

Many may argue that Chan and Sukumaran deserve to be executed for their roles as drug ring leaders have, and in future could have killed many people. Whether the death penalty (a practice with the notion of ‘an eye for an eye’), actually encourages others not to get involved in crime, remains a mystery.

Of course, one could also argue from a religious perspective that no one has the right to take a life, not even to justify the perpetrators wrong doing. States in America, Africa, the Middle and Far East still exercise the death penalty, whilst the majority of the world has abolished Capital punishment for its out-dated principles, it’s also widely believed that the justice system needs to take its course for justice to be done. Another aspect that we often see happening within the legal system is people who were once convicted of crimes, were later released due to DNA or witnesses that come forward.
