Australian Shooter, Michael Diamond

Australian champion shooter Michael Diamond has been ruled ineligible to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics, according to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).

Australian Shooter: Micahael Diamond

The decision by the AOC comes after the 44-year old dual Olympic gold medallist faces charges for firearms and drink-driving. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, but Australian Shooting CEO Damien Marangon says the incident has placed the sport in an inappropriate position.

The AOC facilitated a meeting with Diamond to inform him of their decision. According to the AOC, the decision was made after taking into account the nominations and selection standards that the AOC carries out when choosing athletes to represent Australia at the Olympics.

Diamond has previously competed in six Olympic games and this will be a blow for Australia’s chance of receiving more Olympics medals.

As this is an extremely difficult time for Michael, Shooting Australia did indicate they will continue to be there for him as he needs.

Diamond does the opportunity to appeal Shooting Australia’s, but has not indicate whether he will do so.
