Online Blackjack History

The history of Blackjack is a topic hotly debated by many researchers around the world. As with so many other historical accounts, researchers cannot seem to reach a clear accord on the exact roots of the game. However, most historians agree that Blackjack, or at least its embryonic form, existed in France at the turn of the 17th century. This predecessor was called Vingt-et-Un which means Twenty One. The game of Vingt-et-Un was itself a derivative of other French card games such as French Ferme and Chemin de Fer. Another place in history where a similar version to modern Blackjack can be found is through the writings of famous Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes who is most renowned for his novel Don Quixote. As Cervantes was a gambler himself, many of his stories (those written around the year 1600) included elements of card games, most notably a game called Ventuina, where the object was to reach 21 without busting, almost identical to that of Blackjack. The only difference was that the game was played with a baraja deck, which lacked eights, tens and nines. Another Spanish version of the game was known as One and Thirty where players had to reach 31 with a minimum of three cards. Even though this game was quite different from Blackjack, it still carried some fundamental parallels. When the French colonists reached North America the game spread around the entire continent. At first the rules were quite different from modern Blackjack, but as the game developed so too were the rules we know today. Around the year 1931 the game gained popularity in Nevada when the state passed its laws making gambling legal. An interesting aspect of Blackjack is that it has always been an evolutionary game, and even today its rules are constantly altered, mainly because players always find ways to come out on top. In the 1950s, Blackjack became a game monitored by theorists and mathematicians. People like Roger Baldwin and James McDermott were some of the first pioneers to interpret Blackjack from a mathematical angle, most notably in the forging of optimal strategies that we will look at a little later in this book. Then came perhaps the most prominent figure in Blackjack theory, Edward Thorp. Thorp is credited as the father of card counting – a section that we will also be looking at a little later.

Basic Blackjack Rules

  • A normal win pays 1 to 1
  • Six decks are used in Blackjack. However, this may vary with different variants
  • Splits can only be done on up to 3 hands

Player's Options in Online Blackjack

Blackjack is a highly-involved game. There are many decisions that you will be left to make by yourself and these decisions will have to be clearly communicated to the dealer. Below are some of the decisions you may face and tips on when to play them:

When playing a face-down or face-up game, if you believe that your cards are of a sufficient total, you have the option to stand by selecting the stant button in a game on online blackjack.

Player's can opt for as more cards as many times as they wish, as long as their hand total does not exceed 21.

Doubling Down

An extremely exciting element to online blackjack, one that allows you to increase your wager in the middle of a hand, is known as doubling down. Essentially, the double down play means that you can make a second wager no higher than your original wager. When you choose to double down, you will receive only one additional card. However, this option may only apply to certain online blackjack varaints.

Splitting Pairs

Whenever your first two cards have the same value (for example, two fives), you can choose to split and play them as two separate hands. When you split your first two cards, the initial wager you have placed will be doubled. However, the splitting rule may only apply to certain online blackjack varaints.

Insurance Bet

The insurance bet is essentially a side bet on whether or not the dealer’s face down card is a 10-value card. Make sure that the dealer asks for insurance bets before he has seen his face-down card. The insurance bet’s limit is half of your initial wager. Blackjack tables should have a designated ‘insurance bet’ area located on the table’s layout. If the dealer’s down card really turns out to be a 10-value card then the insurance bet will be a winner, winning back your initial wager loss. If the dealer has a natural he automatically wins unless your hand is also a natural, in which instance the hand is a push.

The surrender rule permits you to withdraw from the round with any hand holding a total of less than 21. This additional, side bet option may only apply to specific online blackjack variants.

How to Win at Online Blackjack Guaranteed

  • Never take insurance as it is just a side bet and will lose you money
  • ALWAYS Split Aces and 8's.
  • NEVER Split 10, 5 or 4.
  • In most cases, if the dealer has a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, they are most likely to bust
  • If a dealer has a 7 or higher, they are more likely to get between 18 and 21
